RENEW ANNOUNCES FINAL CANDIDATE LIST AHEAD OF GENERAL ELECTION
Wednesday, November 13th: Renew announces final candidates for the December general election
Renew will be running a focused campaign in four selected seats spread across the UK in Sefton Central (Carla Burns), Hackney North and Stoke Newington (Haseeb Ur-Rehman), Edinburgh North and Leith (Heather Astbury) and Bromley and Chislehurst (Jyoti Dialani).
Renew had initially announced a shortlist of 51 candidates, but have decided to stand down in 47 of those to avoid splitting the Remain vote. Six of these seats - Bermondsey and Old Southwark, Cheadle, Chelsea and Fulham, Southport, South East Cambridgeshire, and Wantage - are covered by the Unite to Remain agreement, which has already seen Liberal Democrat, Green and Plaid Cymru candidates standing aside. Renew is officially endorsing the Unite To Remain candidates in these five constituencies.
Renew was formed in 2017 as a vehicle for bringing in ordinary people from outside politics, that campaigns for political reform, fixing inequality and environmental protection. They have petitioned for a second referendum on EU membership, which forms a cornerstone of their election platform.
Renew has stood in parliamentary by-elections in Peterborough and Newport West earlier this year, capturing 4% of the popular vote in Newport. But this is the first general election they will be running in as a fully-formed party.
Julie Girling, Interim Leader of Renew, said:
“We are thrilled to be announcing our candidates standing in Hackney, Bromley, Edinburgh and Liverpool. They’re varied people from all walks of life and backgrounds, and are normal people who understand their local constituencies. What we’re most looking forward to is the opportunity to get out on the streets and doorsteps and spread our positive message and talk to people about the issues that matter to them. Every time we are out meeting voters, we hear how tired they are by the dated vision offered to them by established parties. They are ready for something new.”
