Despite strong employment levels, our economy has not been improving living standards across the country. This is due mainly to poor productivity and long-term economic uncertainty. Renew will look at ways to drive UK innovation and entrepreneurship through investing in the facilities to support business, as well as introducing key reforms.
Inequalities and differences between regions, salary levels, and generations are stark. While globalisation and free trade have boosted our economy and created opportunities for many, the costs and benefits have not been evenly distributed. Many have debts or feel robbed of opportunity. Productivity gains through technological advances have disproportionately rewarded the wealthiest in society. We must rebalance our economy through radical structural reforms, innovative investment and targeted support for the poorest in our society. Everyone has a contribution to make; we will work with our communities to improve the lives of all.
Man-made climate change, air pollution, falling biodiversity and bacterial resistance present significant threats to our health and the environment. We must find urgent solutions with our partners using the latest research and technology, mobilising business and activating the public to change their habits – thus relieving pressure on the environment for future generations.
The decisions of past governments combined with economic underperformance and social inequalities are straining our public services. When they fail, it is the poorest and most vulnerable who suffer the most. Public services require more investment, reform and reduced bureaucracy, to ensure we have well-supported staff and properly funded, fit-for-purpose services on which we can all rely.
Britain has enjoyed substantial soft power and global influence in recent years due to active diplomacy, culture, education and targeted aid, supported by distinctive branding and communications. Britain risks becoming less influential because of Brexit and geopolitical changes. This will affect our ability to project smart power, threatening UK interests around the world and representing lost opportunities. We must re-engage so that the UK is restored as a respected, responsible nation contributing to the common good.
Openness & Inclusivity
We are open to the world and new ideas. We welcome discussion, criticism and enquiry. We welcome support and involvement from everyone, no matter which party, grouping or identity they hold.
We will not let personal ambition, lack of courage or inflexible ideology prevent us doing what’s best for the country.
We speak frankly and are honest with our views and opinions. In this era of misinformation and multiple information sources, we will ensure that we share only factual information, expose lies and are transparent about our activities.
We recognise cause and effect and our obligation to act to care for other people in our community and around the world. We also know that contributing to regional economic stability and providing solutions to common challenges helps our security and prosperity at home.
We believe in sustaining an ecological balance and avoiding the depletion of natural resources. We believe in making sure we don’t pass environmental or financial problems to future generations.
We believe in creating opportunity so that people can fulfil their potential and ambition unhindered by circumstance. We believe this is best fostered by thinking differently, challenging orthodoxies and facilitating what is best in our society.
We believe in putting forward a positive vision for the UK; encouraging division and disunity will only harm the country in the long run.
We plan to renew faith in politics and institutions by engaging more closely with people, listening to their ideas and giving them a voice.
We will actively promote tolerance and equality of opportunity, and address discrimination where we see it.
We believe that renewing Britain as the innovation superpower, revolutionising opportunity and making our generation great is a compelling mission for our country. However, our country is divided by the EU referendum because many people feel they were lied to. Young people overwhelmingly voted to remain and no one was given a clear idea of what post-Brexit Britain would look like.
Moreover, Theresa May’s mandate for her vision of Brexit was shattered by her weak election result.
We want to stop Brexit and believe a second referendum on the final deal negotiated with the EU is overwhelmingly in the interests of both Leave and Remain supporters. The British people must be allowed a vote on the reality of Brexit and come to an informed decision. We will put pressure on all politicians to offer a second referendum by standing parliamentary candidates in every constituency in the UK.
Three hundred years ago Britain industrialised and revolutionised the world. Today’s fourth industrial revolution is fusing the physical, digital and biological worlds to cure disease, rescue our environment and repair our economy.
We mean to lead that revolution and be the world’s innovation superpower again. We will invest in infrastructure and research labs in vital technologies, such as batteries, biotechnology and artificial intelligence to create the wealth to revolutionise opportunity, fund high quality public services and be the first country to create an economy that saves the planet. We’ll make sure this infrastructure is built outside London, harnessing the power of our Northern universities and drawing in investment for new technology production and hi-tech manufacturing.
We want to review student finance, prioritising science and technology subjects for government grants. We want to make sure we’re training and retaining the best minds to renew our industries and create high quality jobs.
Restore public services
We acknowledge the huge difficulties facing the NHS, we will use experts to identify the problems and research the appropriate solutions.
We will use technology to restore service and relieve pressure on A&E units.
We will create a university sized NHS tech lab which will harness the power of our National Heath Service to use big data and technology to create cutting edge new treatments and discoveries in the health sciences.
Save the planet with a green revolution
Today our children are threatened by air pollution which kills 40,000 people a year in the UK and climate change.
Yet, for the first time, it is possible to decarbonise our economy through innovation and market forces.
Offshore wind power prices are collapsing and are now cheaper than nuclear energy.
Our country will be the first to convert to mass renewable electrification, create thousands of jobs in new industries, clean our air, lead others to follow our example and save our planet.
We are against the current inequalities that have been growing in the UK in recent decades under Labour, Conservative and Coalition Governments.
It is a key goal of Renew to reverse this negative trend and make the UK a more equal society.
The Renew Opportunity Programme
We believe that any person with the right determination, the right coaching and chance can achieve anything.
If you have a dream. We will give you the chance to live it. If you are a single mother with no qualifications and haven’t worked for a decade, but want to become an engineer then you can.
In our through life education programme you’ll be able to enrol in a course using online technology and classroom time that will train you from first principles up to degree entry level.
You can take as long as you like to complete the course and if you pass, you’ll have the skills to apply for an engineering degree course.
We’ll remove barriers to returning to education with financial help and childcare and we’ll work with employers to get you that first job.
We need inspiring people from all ethnic, religious and social backgrounds to stand for parliament and support us in every part of the country. We have a positive vision to make Britain better and more equal than it has ever been before. We want this country to be open to Europe and the World, a place where anyone can become wealthy but nobody has to live in poverty.
